Good Idea: Nail bar leads creative ways to help reduce violent crime

London charity has developed four programmes to tackle violent crime by engaging young people in creative projects, giving them the opportunity to develop their talents and get into education, employment and training.

Provider: Art Against Knives

Since its creation in 2009, the charity Art Against Knives has helped hundreds of young people from some of the most deprived areas of London steer away from violent crime.

It uses art as a tool for change and helps young people under 25 develop the skills required to help them find employment.

Art Against Knives was brought to life in 2009 when co-founder Katy Dawe, a student at London's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, organised with friends an exhibition to raise money for their fellow student Oliver Hemsley, who was the victim of an unprovoked stabbing in Shoreditch in 2008.
